A specialist in religion and literature, and reception history of the Bible. Among his numerous books, articles, and book chapters are a monograph on the reception history of 2 Kings 2:23-25 (Evil Children in Religion, Literature, and Art). He also coedits the Encyclopedia of the Bible and Its Reception (30 volumes) and Studies in Religion and the Arts (Brill monograph series). Recipient of the Jones Faculty Lecture Award, Jones Award for Superior Teaching and Excellence of Scholarship, and Mary Louise Van Artsdalen Prize for Outstanding Scholarly Achievement.
